Prof. Dr. Ralf Wagner, CEO, CSO
Prof. Dr. Wagner is initiator of the company foundation. He is responsible for GENEART’s company policy and all R&D activities. In addition, he is heading the Molecular Microbiology and Gene Therapy Unit at the Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hygiene, University of Regensburg. Prof. Wagner is a renowned scientist and has more than 15 years practical and theoretical experience in various fields of microbiology, immunology and vaccine development. He is inventor of several international patents and author of numerous scientific publications. As consultant and expert reviewer he supports the German Research Association (DFG), the German Ministry of Health and Education, the European Commission and several international foundations. Prof. Wagner is part of an excellent scientific network including world wide research clusters, public organisations, biotech and pharmaceutical companies.
Christian Ehl, CEO, CFO
Christian Ehl is responsible for the finance & controlling department since the formation of GENEART in mid 2000. He has several years of entrepreneurial experience as assistant to the founder of a publicly listed company (2.500 employees). He worked as Investment Manager for one of the leading German Private Equity Funds before. Christian Ehl has deep knowledge in structured finance and has successfully closed a number of financing rounds for young technology companies. He holds a master degree in Business Administration from the University of Wuerzburg.
Marcus Graf, PhD, Manager Operations,
Head of Business Unit Gene Synthesis
Dr. Graf is co-founder of GENEART and responsible for the gene production process. Dr. Graf has over 10 years of expertise in the field of gene synthesis including different host expression systems ranging from procaryotes (E.coli, Mycobacterium spec, ...), different yeasts, mammalian cell culture up to plants and transgenic animals. Dr. Graf pursued his studies at the Universities of Edinburgh and of Regensburg.
Bernd Merkl, Manager Business Development
Bernd Merkl joined GENEART in early 2005 and is responsible for business development. Prior to his engagement at GENEART, he worked for a public listed biotechnology company and for Henkel KGaA in Düsseldorf, where Mr. Merkl gained indepth experience in strategic planning, R&D controlling and product development.
Mr. Merkl received a masters degree in business administration from the University Regensburg / University College Dublin, and holds a degree in biology & chemistry from the University Erlangen-Nürnberg.
David Raab, PhD, Manager Process Development
D. Raab has vast experience in software development and database design. He joined GENEART in 2002 to devise new bioinformatic applications for synthetic gene design and assembly as well as to advance the automation of the gene synthesis process. D. Raab holds a MSc in Chemistry from the University of Regensburg and has several years of work experience in his own software company.

Michael Liss, PhD, Senior Scientist Gene Evolution
Dr. Michael Liss joined GENEART in early 2002. He is responsible for the development of synthetic combinatorial libraries and has gained broad experience in this field in the laboratory of Dr. Larry Gold. Dr. Liss received his PhD in molecular virology from Universities in Boulder, Colorado and Regensburg, Germany.
Frank Notka, PhD, Senior Scientist Gene Delivery
Dr. Notka is responsible for the development of products related to gene expression and gene transfer, trimmed for individual applications like protein synthesis, DNA vaccine or gene therapy. Dr. Notka pursued his studies at the Universities of Colorado and Regensburg, and performed several studies in the field of HIV vaccine and therapy development in academic and industrial environment. He focussed on viral and non viral expression systems afterwards.
Michael Spring, PhD, Senior Scientist
Gene Delivery
Dr. Spring is responsible for the plasmid production and antibody services and joined GENEART in 2003. He has excellent knowledge in humoral and cellular immunology and worked several years as Project Leader in the Preclinical Development of bispecific antibodies at Micromet AG, Munich. Additionally, he conducted several years of HIV research at the German Primate Center in Goettingen where he also received his PhD.
Thomas Schoedl, PhD, Senior Scientist
Customer Project Managment
Dr. Schoedl is responsible for the scientific processing of customer requests and the coordination of ongoing projects at GENEART. He has comprehensive expertise in bioinformatics and molecular biology. In addition Dr. Schoedl has profound knowledge concerning gene optimization strategies for all commonly used organisms and expression systems. He joined Geneart in early 2004 after receiving his PhD in protein biochemistry from the University of Regensburg, Germany.
Gabriele Fiedler, PhD, Senior Scientist Gene Synthesis
Dr. Gabriele Fiedler is heading the gene synthesis laboratory since establishment of the company. She has in depth knowledge in gene synthesis, based on her vast experience in production and cloning of genes during the last years. Additionally Dr. Fiedler is responsible for all questions concerning Environment, Safety, Security and Health. She received her PhD in molecular biology from the University of Regensburg, Germany.
Norbert Greifenegger, PhD, Senior Scientist
Gene Synthesis
Dr. Norbert Greifenegger joined GENEART in 2001. He is responsible for the construction of synthetic DNA in the Gene Synthesis Business Unit. Dr. Norbert Greifenegger has gained his knowledge about PCR techniques at the institut of molecular microbiologie and hygiene, Regensburg and received his PhD in chemistry from the University of Regensburg, Germany.
